Footballers who looked old when they were young!
|
Have been reading again the book "They played with John Lyall" and don't know if it was the 70's and 80's with the comb overs and beards but bloody hell some of those players looked ancient when they were in their 20's and 30's. Thought I would ask the question after seeing Darlo Debs post on the Regrets thread stating quite rightly that Steve Bould looked middle aged when he was young. So which players looked old even when they were young? I'll start with the comb over twosome of Pop Robson and Bobby Charlton.

Debs - Apparently the ball they used in that match was the same ball they had used for twenty years,. It had received 10 new bladders, several new leather casings and 10 new sets of stitching but it was the same ball !! :-)

I saw that but hadn't got a clue how to post pictures on here. Frightening likeness. Wonder if he used the double headed coin from the cards episode in the toss for ends?!

Not so much a player that looks old, but have just been sent a pic of the European Cup final in 71 and the ref is the doppleganger of Trigger from Only Fools & Horses.

Lombardo immediately sprung to my mind. He was THIRTY ONE when he joined Palace. Looked about 50.

Robben. I would routinely show American and Canadian friends his photo from when he was 22. They all thought he was a man in his 40's.

Far Cough I was aware that he played for Stoke when he turned 50. What I was Highlighting was that he still kept himself fit. The Guy was ahead of his time, he didn't smoke, didn't drink, one day in the week he didn't eat - just drink fluids. He drank carrot juice - which was unknow to most people at the time. Did 50 press up and sit up every day and on the days he went training he would walk around with 7 pound leg weights around his ankles - so come match days " when put on his football boots he felt he was "flying during the match".
His biggest regret was that he could have transferred to the midfield from being a winger (which arguably have to be the fittest / fastest person on the pitch). He said he could have played for another 3-5 years.
Pele even said he was the first modern footballer since e was careful of his diet and fitness.

Yeah but Matthews played in the old 1st division at the age of 50, which was the top division at the time
Remarkable player, even people who never followed football, would always mention Stanley Matthews, he was that respected throughout the world
